Burnley Member of Parliament Kitty Ussher MP today pledged to carry on the fight to retain Post Office services under threat in Burnley.
Kitty has been leading the campaign to save the 5 threatened branches in Hapton, Cheapside Padiham Road, Parliament Street, Piccadilly Road and Walk mill, Cliviger. She sent out thousands of surveys and helped collect hundreds of signatures for petitions before making her submission to the consultation process.
Post Office bosses today released their response to the consultation document and have decided that all five Post Offices affected in Burnley would close.
However the Burnley MP has said that the final decision has not taken into account all of the points made by her submission, and those of other responders, to the consultation and that she believes there are good grounds to continue the fight on services in the area.
Kitty Ussher MP said,
“I am very disappointed that Post Office bosses have made this decision. I believe that working together with the affected communities we put forward a very strong case to retain those Post Office branches"
"The Government currently funds the Post Office with £2 billion a year but it losses millions of pounds a day, that is why changes to the network are needed to ensure a strong Post Office network for the future. However the Government have said that Post Office bosses should listen to the views of the local communities affected before making any decisions. I do not think that on this occasion they have listened and they have not adequately answered all my concerns. I believe we have strong grounds for appeal in at least three cases and I will review the others."
"I have always said I will fight for the services local people want and I will continue fighting to ensure that local residents’ views are heard.”
