‘Beware of scam lottery letters’ Says Kitty Ussher MP

Kitty Ussher MP has urged constituents to be on their guard over a fake lottery scam. Many constituents have received letters personally addressed to them in the post from Spain that claim they have won thousands of pounds in prize money in the Spanish lottery. The letters look official but ask recipients to send a processing fee to release their 'prize'. However the letter is a fraud and constituents who send money risk loosing thousands of pounds.

The scam has been featured on the BBC TV show Watchdog but letters target vulnerable people, such as the elderly or people that can't speak English very well, who may not be aware the scheme is a fake.

Kitty Ussher MP said,

"Scams like this target the most vulnerable people. I would advise anyone who receives a letter like this to throw it in the bin and be vigilant for family members who might be targeted by such a scheme over the Christmas period. I have now taken this matter up with the Government to try and get the law changed to make it easier to stop this type of junk mail."
