KITTY CALLS FOR LANDLORD LICENSING
Kitty Ussher, MP for Burnley, is urging Burnley Council to support new provisions brought in by the Government under the Housing Act 2004 that give Local Authorities the power to selectively licence privately rented properties. Kitty believes that implementing these powers would mean that many of the problems suffered by her constituents due to negligent landlords could be easily avoided.
In a meeting with the Chief Executive, Steve Rumbelow, on Friday, Kitty responded to complaints from numerous constituents about irresponsible landlords by urging him to use the opportunity provided by the Government, and implement a system of compulsory licensing. The licences will apply in designated areas that are suffering from either poor housing demand, significant and persistent anti-social behaviour, or both.
Kitty believes that the new Government provisions present Burnley with a significant opportunity to eradicate many of the problems surrounding these issues that are troubling local residents, and thus she will be strongly encouraging the Council to implement the new Government proposals.
Kitty Ussher said:
“The Government has done its bit, by making a licensing system possible, but now is the time for Burnley to act. I feel quite strongly that Burnley would benefit from such a licensing system, and as the Government has made the provision, the council should use the opportunity. Many of the complaints I receive from constituents are regarding problems caused due to irresponsible landlords, which could be avoided with the use of a licensing system”.
