This morning Burnley MP Kitty Ussher boarded the first direct train from Burnley to Manchester in over a generation. The new service which is run by Northern Rail, calls at Burnley Central, Burnley Barracks, Rosegrove, Hapton and ends at Manchester Victoria.
The new service means that people in Burnley no longer have to change trains to get to Manchester. They no longer have to worry about missing connecting trains, or heavy traffic if they’re driving – they can simply get on a direct train which will take them into the heart of Manchester!
Initially, there will be a morning and evening train but further alterations will be looked at as part of Northern Rails drive to meet customers needs.
Steve Butcher, Area Director for Northern Rail states:
“We continually review our services to ensure they are meeting the needs of our customers. The new service will benefit a significant number of current passengers and also encourage motorists to switch to our trains.”
Kitty has been campaigning to get better rail links into Manchester for a while and is extremely pleased that her meetings with Northern Rail and leaflet campaign has helped make this new service a reality!

"I'm so thrilled to be on the first direct train from Burnley to Manchester! It's fantastic that the people of Burnley now have a direct hassle free route to jobs in the city and I'm happy to see people utilising the service this morning. Burnley deserves better rail links and this train is the first step towards that. I'm proud to be apart of this momentous moment."
