“CHECK OUT FAIRTRADE”, says Kitty Ussher MP
Burnley MP Kitty Ussher joined Burnley joined staff and shoppers at Tesco’s in Burnley on Saturday 10th March to celebrate the success of Fairtrade Fortnight and to urge shoppers to “check out” Fairtrade.
The store is supporting Burnley’s bid to become a Fairtrade Town and has introduced a new range of Fairtrade products including a peanut and raisin mixed pack, cotton wool, a mixed sunflower bouquet and Fairtrade socks to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight. This now brings their range of Fairtrade products to 137, 29 of which are Tesco’s own brand.
Tesco said:
“Tesco strongly supports Fairtrade which guarantees that developing world farmers are paid a price that covers the cost of production, plus a premium to be spent on community projects such as better healthcare, sanitation, education or housing. We recognise that this is vital in bringing stability to many small suppliers in developing countries.”
On the day shoppers were urged to “check out” Fairtrade products – to read the information on the benefits of Fairtrade, to view the wide range of products available and to literally check out Fairtrade products at the counter to support Fairtrade and Burnley’s bid to become a Fairtrade Town.
Kitty also raised the issue of Fairtrade in Parliament and urged the government to support Burnley’s campaign to become a Fairtrade town.
Kitty said:
“I’m proud to announce that over 32 establishments – employers, supermarkets, and community and faith groups have signed up to Fairtrade. This is fantastic! However, more is needed and I’m urging all employers, community groups, catering and retail establishments to follow suit and sign up to Fairtrade. In doing so, not only will enjoy high quality goods but you will also help support and sustain small local economies in some of the world's poorest regions.”
“For further information on Fairtrade and to add your establishment to the Burnley Fairtrade List for future publication please contact Vicky Rees in my office on 01282 450840, by post at 2 Victoria Street, Burnley, BB11 1DD or by email at ussherk@parliament.uk”
