12th March 2008
Burnley ended Fairtrade Fortnight 2008 in style with it’s first ever Fairtrade Fashion Show. The show was organised by Hameldon Community College and Blessed Trinity Roman Catholic College, to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight. The two schools have been involved in Burnley’s Fairtrade Town campaign and decided, with the help of Burnley’s Fairtrade Steering Group, to organise a joint Fairtrade Fashion show to celebrate Burnley becoming a Fairtrade Town and end Fairtrade Fortnight in style!

The show featured a variety of colourful Fairtrade clothes from a range of suppliers, all shown off on the catwalk to a backdrop of funky electro ethnic beats and a Fairtrade video screen projection!
The show was officially opened by Gemma Baron radio presenter from 2BR who thanked the students and audience for coming along to support such a worth while cause. Peter Thorne (Vice Chair of Burnley’s Fairtrade Steering Group) also said a few words on Fairtrade and Burnley’s Fairtrade campaign, and thanked everyone who’s been involved with the Fashion show for their support.
The suppliers at the show were:
Marks and Spencer (Burnley)
Ethical Threads
Tesco (Burnley Store)
Fair Necessities
Bishopston Trading Company
Just Trade
Fair Necessities (a company which sells ethical accessories) hosted a stall at the event as did Marks and Spencer’s. Fairtrade refreshments were provided by the Rhode Island Coffee and the music for the show was produced by L.I.M.A.

The students at both schools strongly support social enterprises and good causes and played a key part in the organising of the show, from recruiting models, writing script, designing programmes to producing the screen backdrop.
Nicola Tootle, Specialist School Co-ordinator said “I was absolutely delighted with the outcome of the show, the students had put a lot of hard work into the event and it was great to see that come to fruition. A big thanks must go out to all the suppliers who provided clothing for the evening and especially to Burnley Youth Theatre who kindly donated the use of their theatre”
Ingrid Coleman stated “Fairtrade is an extremely worth while cause and it’s something that many young people in Burnley are concerned about. By making just a simple change in your life such as choosing Fairtrade, you make a huge difference to somebody else’s life.

2BR presenter Gemma said “It was great to see the students taking such an active role in supporting Fairtrade. If these young people can show such a passion for the principals of fairness and social justice, then that should be an example to us all. I’d urge everyone to change today and choose Fairtrade” .
