KITTY'S SUPPORTS THE CALL TO END OPPRESSION OF THE POOR IN GOLDMINING COUNTRIES
Burnley MP Kitty Ussher will visit the ‘Unearth Justice’ stall in Burnley town centre on Saturday 14th October at 13.50pm to show her support for the campaign, which calls for retailers and manufactures of jewellery to practice responsible gold mining.
The campaign seeks to highlight how gold mining in certain countries such as Democratic Republic of the Congo often oppresses the poor by spoiling their land and environment, polluting water supplies and causing disease and conflict. Cafod supporters from St. John the Baptist Church will be asking people on the day to sign up the ‘Gold Chain Petition’, which they will present to retailers to urge them to ensure that the gold they sell is responsibly mined.
Kitty said:
“Communities should benefit from the natural resources they have, not be oppressed or hurt due to them. In this day & age companies should be more aware and socially responsible for the products they manufacture or sell and I would urge all people who care about responsible manufacturing to sign the Gold Chain Petition to put pressure on the industry to end destructive gold mining practices”
