Cabinet minister Geoff Hoon comes to Hapton - Its time Hapton had its say, says local MP Kitty
The Rt. Hon. Geoff Hoon, Minister for Europe, visited Hapton and Padiham today to meet local residents and listen to their views. He joined local Labour campaigner Jean Cunningham, and spoke to residents of Cotton Street in Padiham, before knocking on residents' doors in Hapton to allow them to raise any issues that they may have with a senior member of the Government.
Mr. Hoon also talked about the various ways Europe is investing in the region, such as the inclusion of Hapton and Padiham on the Government's assisted areas map that allows companies within the area to access financial assistance to help towards investment.
Mr. Hoon also visited Clegg's shop in Hapton, prior to a visit from Kitty Ussher, Burnley's MP on Friday, to discuss the problems that the shop has been experiencing with regards to anti-social behaviour.
Kitty said:
"I invited Geoff Hoon because I wanted to make sure that senior members of the government understand the issues facing us here. Central Burnley has had its share of government ministers over the years so I thought it was about time that Hapton people were able to have their say. And I also wanted to say thank you to Mr Hoon as our minister for Europe for the part he played in making Hapton and Padiham European Assisted Area for the first time at the end of last year, meaning government cash is now available to bring new investment and jobs into the area."
Geoff Hoon, said:
"I enjoyed my visit to Hapton and Padiham and was delighted to receive such a warm Lancashire welcome. I was pleased to see that local Labour Councillors and campaigners like Jean Cunningham and Cllr. Andy Tatchell are working so hard for the town, and I've listened closely to what local residents had to say about jobs, housing and anti-social behaviour. Thank you to everyone who took the time to speak to me on Tuesday."
