Burnley needs 7 more retail outlets and 1 more cafe to commit to using at least 2 Fairtrade products in order for the town to be awarded Fairtrade status. However, retailers and café owners at the meeting already signed up to Fairtrade were keen to express the benefits of using Fairtrade products.
Andrew Smalley manager at Rhode Island manager states
“Fairtrade products are made by companies that care about other people and are therefore of a very high quality. Our customers come to us because of the high quality of our products and are more than willing to pay extra for that and for the knowledge that they are purchasing ethically sound products. Far from being reduced, our profit margins are increased by offering Fairtrade products”
Indeed the benefits in terms of sales are quite clear - in the UK Fairtrade sales are doubling every two years with sales of Fairtrade products in the UK now worth £300m per year. There are now over 2,500 retail and catering products carrying the Fairtrade mark. In other words Fairtrade is a rapidly expanding market with huge growth potential.
Kitty Ussher states
“In Burnley, the demand for Fairtrade products has been rising and this is one of the reasons why I started the Fairtrade Town Campaign. By stocking Fairtrade products now you would be making the most of this growth opportunity. Most wholesalers do stock Fairtrade products you just need to enquire about them. Indeed, Burnley’s own cash and carry - Booker’s on Gannow Lane has a range of Fairtrade products available.”
If you’re a retailer or café owner in Burnley please ask yourself the following questions. Do you want to be one of the Fairtrade Shops? Do you want your establishment to be included in the Town’s Fairtrade directory? Do you want to receive free publicity support for your store? Do you want to be recognised as a socially responsible and caring trader? If you replied yes to any of the above then please join the Fairtrade campaign and sell or serve 2 Fairtrade products. It is as simple as that you do not need to serve only Fairtrade products just add 2 Fairtrade items to the other products you sell”
If you want to be one of the Fairtrade shops or cafes or want some more information about using Fairtrade products then please contact Vicky Rees on 01282 450840 or at reesv@parliament.uk.
