Kitty meets local residents to discuss their objections to Elevate plans

Kitty Ussher, MP for Burnley today met residents of Daneshouse and Stoneyholme ward as they presented her with a petition against the demolition of houses on Brougham Street, Belford Street, and Merton Street.

Residents used this meeting to tell the MP that they felt that people living in the area had not been listened to by the Council, as consultation meetings to discuss the plans had been well attended by local people, who voiced their objections, but the Council are planning to go ahead with the demolition regardless.

Councillor Shah Hussain attended the meeting, and argued that;
"Demolishing these houses will rip the heart and soul out of our community. Local people have spent a lot of their own money on home improvements, and the houses are in good condition. This is a long established community, where people feel safe and secure and have good access to services, and for the Council to force people to move from this area, especially without presenting a viable alternative, is simply scandalous."

Kitty Ussher MP said;

"I wholeheartedly support the residents of this area in their campaign. I believe very strongly that it is important to preserve long established communities, and especially in this case where the housing is of perfectly decent quality, I see no reason for these streets to be demolished. I believe that demolishing these particular streets, which form the heart of this community, will have a very detrimental effect on this area as a whole, and thus I am prepared to support the residents fully in their fight to keep their houses."

Kitty Ussher will present a copy of the petition together with a letter voicing her own support for their campaign to the Chief Executive of Elevate.
