MP FIGHTS FOR FAIRTRADE BURNLEY
Shops and cafes urged to serve fair trade produce
Local MP Kitty Ussher is leading an initiative to enable Burnley to become a fair-trade town.
She has written to all the large employers, shops, cafes and restaurants to urge them to offer fair-trade produce to their staff and customers. She is also asking the council to pass a resolution to make Burnley a fair-trade town.
And on Sunday she held a meeting of local activists to co-ordinate the campaign at the Central Methodist Church.
Kitty said: “I urge Burnley’s shops, cafes and restaurants to serve fair-trade produce. It’s clear from my mailbag that this is something that my constituents want so it makes good business sense, as well as being the right thing to do to give a guaranteed income to subsistence farmers throughout the world.
“Fairtrade fortnight 2007 starts on 26 February. To coincide with that, I will be publishing the names of all the cafes, restaurants, shops and employers in Burnley and Padiham that serve fair-trade produce so that people know where to go to get hold of it. If you want to be on that list, please ring my office on 450840. We can also provide details of wholesalers that provide fair trade goods at reasonable prices.”
