Kitty Ussher, MP for Burnley and Padiham today takes up a new post as Economic Secretary to the Treasury, in Gordon Brown’s new government. This is a high profile ministerial position, which was previously filled by the prime minister's right hand man Ed Balls MP.
The Economic Secretary is Treasury minister responsible for matters involving banking and finance, and is also involved in taxation as it impacts on these areas. In addition, the Economic Secretary advises on economic policy and works with other treasury ministers on the Comprehensive Spending Review and finance bills.
Kitty said:
“I’m obviously delighted at the news, and very proud. I originally trained as an economist, so I’m glad to be able to put this knowledge to good use.
Yet, despite the new job, I’ll still be spending as much time in the constituency as before, and will continue to work as hard as ever for my constituents”.
Kitty was elected to represent Burnley in 2005 and in October 2006 joined the government in the junior role as parliamentary private secretary to Margaret Hodge at the Department of Trade and Industry.
Burnley boy Shahid Malik, MP for Dewsbury, has also been promoted by Gordon Brown, taking up a junior ministerial post at the Department for International Development.
