KITTY SAYS “STEP UP - LET’S MAKE BURNLEY A FAIRTRADE TOWN!”
Local cafes and restaurants urged to support Fairtrade Burnley

The Fairtrade campaign headed by Burnley’s MP Kitty Ussher is heating up for Fairtrade Fortnight, which runs from 26th Feb – 11th March.

Kitty today publishes a list of Burnley companies and organisations that have already signed up to supplying fair-trade products and is calling on others to follow suit so that Burnley can call itself a fairtrade town.

Already, Kitty has secured commitments from Burnley College, Burnley & Pendle Travel and Calico Housing to serve fairtrade produce, and is hopeful that Burnley Football Club and Burnley General Hospital will follow. This is in addition to 23 local community and faith groups and a number of the larger shops and supermarkets. In addition Padiham town council has already passed the necessary resolution to declare its support, with Burnley council set to discuss the matter on 24 April this year.

The campaign aims to develop support for The Fairtrade Mark, the UK’s only independent consumer label that guarantees a better deal for farmers in developing countries, ensuring that receive an agreed and stable price for the crops they grow and an additional income to invest for the future.

In order for Burnley to achieve Fairtrade Town status, certain criteria must be met.  These include:

The local council must pass a resolution supporting Fairtrade, and serve Fairtrade coffee and tea at its meetings and in offices and canteens.

(Burnley council already serves fairtrade tea and coffee and will discuss passing a resolution at its meeting of 24 April.)

    2)      Fairtrade products must be used by a number of local work places and community organisations. (See list on next page of participating workplaces and community organisations).

    3)      A range of at least 2 Fairtrade products must be readily available in 18 of the area’s shops and served in 9 local cafés and catering establishments. (We need to make further progress on this)

Kitty Ussher said

“To support and celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight I’m calling on our local community, particularly retail and catering establishments, to step up and join us in Burnley’s bid to become a Fairtrade Town. With increasing demand for ethically traded products and large increases in sales of these products now is the time to commit to Fairtrade - we need just 18 retail outlets and 9 catering establishments to add Fairtrade products to their range of goods in order to achieve our goal.”

“There are now more than 500 products with the Fairtrade mark on sale in the UK. Coffee, tea, chocolate, cocoa, sugar, bananas, vending machine products, fresh fruit, juices, cakes, snacks, are just a small example of the variety available. What’s more these can be purchased easily from all major supermarket chains, wholefood and fair trade shops, and independent retailers as well as over the internet. Details of suppliers and further information is available from my office.”

“The support I have received from the people of Burnley for the Fairtrade Campaign is fantastic and below is a list of all the establishments in Burnley that have committed to Fairtrade so far. In order to join that list you need make a commitment to add Fairtrade products to the range of goods you supply and let my office know that you are doing so. Now is time to take action - change today and choose Fairtrade!”
