Kitty Ussher MP welcomes drop in unemployment in Burnley

Kitty Ussher welcomes the latest Labour market figures which show a 16% decrease in the number of people on JobSeeker’s Allowance in Burnley since 1997.
The new labour market figures released show that both unemployment (on the ILO measure), and the numbers on JobSeeker’s Allowance, are down nationally with the number of people claiming Job Seekers Allowance falling to 908,200 - its lowest level since September 1975.
In Burnley the number of people claiming JSA has fallen by from 1543 to 1293 people which represents a 16% decrease over 10 years.

Kitty Ussher said;

“The figures are very encouraging they show there has been significant decrease in the number of people out of work and on job seekers allowance in Burnley. With help of Labour government measures such as the New Deal, Tax Credits and the minimum wage people in Burnley are managing to lift themselves out of unemployment and benefit dependency and get back to work.”
“It’s amazing that the Tories would scrap such measures, especially the New Deal programme which has helped so many people across my constituency gain training, support, skills and employment. The figures illustrate that investing in training and support is vital for increased prosperity, a stronger economy and more employment.”
