Kitty Urges the Prime Minister to “put a rocket” under Lib Dem/Tory led Council to Speed up Delivery of Elevate Programme.

- Last years under spending is causing delays that are hitting Burnley families.

Today in the House of Commons, Kitty Ussher MP urged outgoing Prime Minister Tony Blair to intervene before he leaves office on the Liberal Democrats and Elevate to speed up the Housing regeneration programme in Burnley.

Kitty Said:

“In the 1980s my predecessor took Minister after Minister to view Burnley’s derelict housing but it took a Labour Government to get the housing market’s renewal programme that was desperately needed. However, the Lib Dem/Tory administration on Burnley Council is moving too slowly, last year they didn’t even spend the money allocated under this scheme. So before he leaves office, will my Right Hon. friend put a rocket under the local authority and agencies so that my constituents finally get the regenerated communities they need and deserve?”

In response The Prime Minister Said:

“I entirely agree with my Honourable friend. Regeneration money in the form of Elevate and Pathfinder programmes has been responsible for the renewing of 35000 homes nationally and 1800 homes in East Lancashire. I find it typical of the Liberal Democrats and the Tories that they don’t have the ability to make things like this happen…this is yet another example of why I don’t think that the Lib Dems and Tories work well in coalitions.”

Following Prime Minister’s Questions Kitty Said:

“I am tired of the delays and uncertainties, so I am sure that the individuals and families in Burnley are fed up too. This Government has put the investment in place but the Lib Dem/Tory led council last year did not even spend the money that they have been given. My patience has run out, it’s time for action and I am glad the Prime Minister agrees. Let’s just get on with it.”
