Burnley’s Fairtrade Steering Group met this week to approve Burnley’s application to become a Fairtrade Town.
The group, chaired by Kitty Ussher MP, has been working hard to get Burnley Fairtrade Status and has made great progress in the last few weeks with a number of educational establishments and another retail outlet – Nisa on Colne Road, agreeing to go Fairtrade.
At the meeting the group viewed the application and were extremely pleased to be able to approve the application to be submitted to the Fairtrade Foundation, subject to one more retailer coming on board.
The group has already met their quota with regard to the number of employers, community groups, educational establishments, cafes and faith groups needed and has also gained the backing of the council and popular support for the campaign – all of which are required by to gain Fairtrade accreditation. Only 1 more retail outlet is needed.
Once fully complete the application will go off to the Fairtrade Foundation for them to examine the application and decide whether Burnley has met all the criteria to become a Fairtrade Town. It’s hoped that Burnley will be able to announce it has achieved Fairtrade status by early 2008.
At the meeting, members of St John the Baptist Church on Ivy Street were also pleased to announce that the St Johns had become a Fairtrade Parish in it’s own right and had been awarded a Fairtrade Accreditation Certificate from the Fairtrade Foundation, which Kitty Ussher presented to Monica Atherton and of St John’s (picture attached)

“I’m so excited about the prospect of Burnley becoming a Fairtrade Town. The group have been working tirelessly hard and have made huge progress - we’re very nearly there, all that’s needed now is one more retail outlet. So please if you’re a retail outlet that sells, or wants to sell two Fairtrade products then please get in contact with my office 01282 450840 to let us know”
“Fairtrade is such a fantastic way of having a huge impact by making such a small change. Just by selling or buying Fairtrade products you are guaranteeing that the people who produced those products get a fair wage for their work and therefore won’t have to live in poverty unable to feed their family – change today, choose Fairtrade”
